He began his early education under the guidance of his father, Mufti Shaista Gul, one of the eminent scholars of the Sarhad in his time. Under him, Shaykh Fadhl Subhan studied Persian, along with the foundational texts of nahw and sarf. He then travelled to Yar Hussain in Swabi, where he continued his studies in the preliminary stages of the Dars Nizami curriculum. As his pursuit of knowledge progressed, he moved between various madaris across the Sarhad region, including Mardan, where he benefited from Maulana Abd al-Rahim Babaji. He later proceeded to Ashraf al-Madaris in Okara, before enrolling at Jamia Nidhamiyyah in Lahore. There, he studied texts such as al-Mirqah, Sharh al-Tahdhib, Marah al-Arwah, and al-Kafiyah under distinguished teachers including Maulana Muhammad Allah Bakhsh and Mufti Abd al-Qayyum al-Hazarwi. In 1956, when Maulana Muhammad Allah Bakhsh accepted a teaching position at Jamia Mudhafarriyyah Ridhawiyyah, Shaykh Fadhl Subhan accompanied him in order to continue benefiting from his instruction. During this period, he studied a wide range of works, including Qutbi, Sullam al-Uloom, Mulla Hasan, Mir Zahid Risalah, Mulla Jami, Hashiyah Abd al-Ghafour, Nur al-Anwar, and al-Husami. Thereafter, he travelled to Bandial, where he remained for approximately four years in the company of the renowned scholar Maulana Ata Muhammad Bandialvi. Under his supervision, Shaykh Fadhl Subhan completed numerous advanced texts, among them Mir Zahid Umur Aammah, Mir Zahid Risalah, Qadhi Mubarak, Hamdullah, al-Siraji, and Tafsir al-Baydawi. His contemporaries during this period included Maulana Abd al-Hakeem Sharaf al-Qadiri, Maulana Ghulam Muhammad al-Tonswi, and Mufti Muhammad Bashir al-Sialvi. Following this, he completed Dawrah Hadith under Maulana Abd al-Mustafa al-Azhari. Upon graduation, he began teaching at Dar al-Uloom Ahsan al-Barakat. However, driven by a continued desire for scholarly refinement, he travelled in 1964 to Jamia Islamiyyah Bahawalpur to pursue specialization in Hadith and Tafsir. Prior to commencing the takhassus, he was required to sit for an oral entrance examination, conducted by Maulana Shams al-Haqq al-Afghani, the former Shaykh al-Tafsir of Dar al-Uloom Deoband. The examination was based on a passage from Tafsir al-Baydawi, which Shaykh Fadhl Subhan completed with distinction. He subsequently completed his specialization and resumed his teaching career thereafter. After teaching in several madaris, he eventually returned to the Sarhad region, where in 1969 he founded Madrassa Jamia Qadiriyyah. In 1999, he travelled to England, where he taught in various madaris for approximately eleven years. Upon his return to Pakistan, he resumed teaching the advanced texts of the Dars Nizami curriculum and became particularly well known for his instruction in the higher works of the rational sciences. His teaching repertoire includes texts such as Hashiyah al-Khayali, Qadhi Mubarak, Hamdullah, Mulla Sadra, the hawashi of Mir Zahid, as well as Dawrah Hadith. Today, many of his students serve as teachers within the same institution, continuing the transmission of the Dars Nizami curriculum under his guidance. Recordings of his lessons are widely circulated and include his lectures on Sharh al-Tahdhib, Mulla Jami, Usul al-Shashi, al-Maybudhi, Mulla Sadra, al-Rashidiyyah, Nur al-Anwar, al-Husami, al-Shams al-Bazighah, Mir Zahid Umur Aammah, Qutbi, al-Talwih, Mulla Hasan, Qadhi Mubarak, Hamdullah, and Hashiyah al-Khayali.
