Shaykh Ismail Ahmed al-Malibari (1939-2011) One of the foremost scholars to emerge from Kerala in recent decades, Shaykh Ismail Ahmed al-Malibari began his formal education at Madrassa Salah al-Din in the Malappuram district. After spending several years there, he entered the traditional study circles of Shaykh Hasan al-Saghir al-Nelikuti in Nilambur, where he continued his foundational training. He subsequently pursued advanced studies under a number of distinguished scholars of his era, among them Shaykh Abd al-Rahman al-Fadhfari, Shaykh Ahmed al-Saghir al-Nahwi, and Shaykh Abd al-Rahman Musliyar, among others. It is worth noting that although the curriculum followed in South India largely mirrors that of the wider Indian subcontinent, there are certain distinctive features. In Arabic grammar, for example, the Alfiyyah-based track is commonly followed, rather than the al-Kafiyah / Mulla Jami sequence, and in jurisprudence, the dominant school is Shafie. At the same time, other core components of the curriculum—particularly in mantiq and ilm al-kalam—remain consistent, including the strong emphasis on Sullam al-Uloom, its commentaries, and the hawashi of Mir Zahid. The books of Hadith are also studied - but usually over a span of 3-4 years. Shaykh Ismail later traveled to Dar al-Uloom Deoband, where he completed Dawrah Hadith in 1964. Among his teachers there were eminent scholars such as Maulana Fakhr al-Din Ahmed al-Muradabadi, Maulana Sharif Hasan al-Deobandi, Maulana Bashir Ahmed Khan, and Maulana Nasir Ahmed Khan, among others. After completing his studies, he returned to South India and began teaching in various masajid. In time, he accepted a teaching position at Dar al-Salam Madrassa in Kozhikode, where he served for approximately five years. Thereafter, he joined Markaz Thaqafah Suniyyah, founded by Shaykh Abu Bakr Ahmed, and commenced a long and fruitful period of teaching there. He was eventually appointed Head of the Hadith Department at the university and remained affiliated with the institution until his passing. During this period, he taught a wide range of subjects across the curriculum, including books of Hadith, Tafsir, Mantiq, Ilm al-Kalam, and Fiqh. Shaykh Ismail was also a prolific author, among his works are: Sharh al-Mishkah – A commentary on Mishkat al-Masabih Fiqh al-Sunnah Aqidah al-Sunnah Al-Taqrir al-Ahsan ala Mulla Hasan - A partial scan of this is available Sharh Tasrih al-Mantiq Hashiyah ala Risalah al-Hisab Bilal Ali’s Commonplace Book Shaykh Ismail Ahmed al-Malibari (1939-2011) One of the foremost scholars to emerge from Kerala in recent decades, Shaykh Ismail Ahmed al-Malibari began his formal education at Madrassa Salah al-Din in the Malappuram district.
